If you look carefully above the S and J of Steven's signature at the bottom of the canyon, you can see Steve's wife and two boys with their friend hiking towards him as he was finishing the painting. Two other people were riding horses as they passed the hikers in the lower right part of the painting at the bend in the canyon floor. You can't see in the painting, but the cliffs to the left and far right, rise over four times the hight of what is visible in the painting.
